Thiruvalluvar Statue Unveiled on Teachers’ Day: A School Event That Made Headlines

On September 5th, C.D. Nayagam School in T. Nagar celebrated Teachers’ Day with a special unveiling of a 4.5-foot statue of the revered Saint Thiruvalluvar. This significant event attracted attention from the local community and highlighted the importance of Thiruvalluvar’s teachings in education.

The statue was unveiled by Dr. Erode Thamizhanban, a distinguished Tamil scholar and Sahitya Akademi awardee. He spoke passionately about Thiruvalluvar’s contributions to Tamil literature and philosophy, inspiring students and faculty alike.

Sculpted by B. Selvakumar from Selakiya Sculpt Works in Mahabalipuram, the statue features a unique inscription of one of Thiruvalluvar’s kurals in the ancient Vattezhuthu script. Additionally, it includes beautiful depictions of the Anicham and Kuvalai flowers, both of which hold significance in Thirukkural, symbolizing the richness of Tamil culture.

The unveiling ceremony was not just about the statue; it also marked the inauguration of the CD Nayagam Students Tamil Center, aimed at fostering a deeper appreciation for Tamil language and culture among students. M. Muthuvelu, former Registrar of Semmozhi Tamil Central Research, inaugurated this center, emphasizing the school’s dedication to preserving Tamil heritage.

As part of the event, T.N. Shanmugam, the school secretary, released a Tamil poetry book, further celebrating the day’s cultural significance. Dignitaries present included V. Ramachandran, Vice Chancellor of Periyar Maniyammai University, Subha Deivanayagam, Joint Secretary of Kalvipani, and Rajeswari Umapathy, the Headmistress, all of whom contributed to the enriching atmosphere of the occasion.

This unveiling is not only a tribute to Thiruvalluvar’s timeless wisdom but also reflects the efforts of Selakiya Sculpt Works to promote Tamil culture through art. With over 30 years of experience, Selvakumar’s exquisite craftsmanship in traditional and modern stone sculptures has gained both national and international recognition. Each piece embodies beauty and cultural significance, reinforcing the importance of education and heritage in shaping future leaders.
